Upgrade Microsoft Dynamics CRM/365

Is it time to upgrade Microsoft Dynamics CRM/365? If you are on an older version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM or Dynamics 365, you are missing transformative functionality. Microsoft re-branded the product from Dynamics CRM to Dynamics 365. Along with the re-branding came a significant amount of new functionality only available in the Dynamics 365 versions.

Online or on-premise? The process for upgrading Microsoft Dynamics CRM/365 will depend on which deployment model you are on. If you are running the on-premise deployment of Dynamics CRM/365, the upgrade will take place on your servers. If you are running the online version, the upgrade will take place in the cloud. For on-premise based deployments, you need to be current on Software Assurance to obtain access to new versions.

Our team has been working with Dynamics CRM since version 1. It takes significant experience with the product to perform a successful upgrade. We have deep expertise in both on-premise and cloud based deployment models and can help with your upgrade.

Items to check before the upgrade

Depending on what version you are going from and to will dictate the level of effort and the individual items to check. Below is a general best practice guide for the items to check before the upgrade:

  • Infrastructure and version on client PC’s – Particularly if you are running the on-premise version, a full review of the IT infrastructure needs to be performed against the requirements of the new version. Client PC’s also need to be reviewed for OS versions, browser requirements, Microsoft Office versions etc.
  • Check custom code – Check the changes to the API for each version released between the version you are on and the version you are upgrading to. Many things have changed in the API over different versions. All custom code must be checked for compatibility.
  • Deprecated Items – Review the items that have been deprecated in all versions between the version you are on and the version you are upgrading to. Different items are deprecated in versions of Dynamics CRM/365 and will need to be replaced with more current supported items.
  • Integrations – This will depend on the method used for integrations. If using a 3rd party integration product like Scribe, check compatibility with the 3rd party provider. If you are using API/custom integrations, check the API documentation for each version between your current and the version you are upgrading to.
  • Third Party ISVs – if you have any add-ons installed, check with each vendor to see if they have an update available for the version you are upgrading to.
  • Workflows – Review all workflows, particularly heavily custom workflows for compatibility with the new version.
  • Custom Reports also need to be reviewed for compatibility with the new version.
